Urgent: Contact Senator Perata to oppose Assembly Budget Deal
FCL's letter to Senator Perata
Dear FCL Supporter,
Though the details are still coming in, early this morning, the State Assembly passed a budget that:
- delays cost-of-living-allowances to low-income seniors, the blind and disabled (SSI/SSP)
- raids $1 billion from local transit agencies
- cuts funding for Proposition 36 drug treatment
- eliminates teacher tax credits
- gives $500 million in tax breaks to the motion picture industry
- gives $115 million in tax breaks for jet fuel to the airline industry
- increases tax credits for research and development, meaning some corporations will have no tax liability to the State of California
The budget bill now moves to the State Senate.
We should never sacrifice the poor or make short-sighted spending cuts for political expediency. Obviously, a budget that gives tax breaks to wealthy entertainment moguls and multinational corporations while cutting spending for some of the neediest Californians--and cuts drug treatment in the wake of escalating prison spending--reflects the wrong priorities for California and has drawn strong opposition from Senate President pro Tem Don Perata.
Please take a moment to call, fax, or e-mail Senator Perata and your State Senator today and urge the Senate to hang tough and restore funding for SSI/SSP recipients, Proposition 36 drug treatment, teacher tax credits and eliminate the new tax breaks for corporations.
