Health care update, SICKO!
Dear FCL Supporter,
Senate Bill 840, The California Universal Healthcare Act,
passed the State Senate by a vote of 23 to 15 and now moves to the State
Assembly.
SB 840 is the only universal health care proposal in the Legislature (no
author has picked up Governor Schwarzenegger's proposal) which offers
comprehensive care and has been likened to Medicare, a single-payer system
for elderly Americans. Under SB 840, health care delivery would remain
private with the state acting as the insurance company. Despite spending
$186 billion per year on health care, California has 6.5 million residents
with no health insurance. Between 25 percent to 45 percent of every health
care dollar is currently spent on overhead, including administration and
profits.
Under SB 840, overhead would be limited to five percent of each health care
dollar (Medicare currently spends between two percent and three percent for
overhead). SB 840 would also realize other economies of scale, such as the
ability to purchase prescription drugs and medical equipment in bulk.
According to a report by The Lewin Group, a prominent national health care
consulting firm, these efficiencies would amount to savings of $25 billion
per year. SB 840 applies these savings to the delivery of health care.
Please send letters and make phone calls to your Assembly Member and urge
support for SB 840. For sample letters and additional resources, please

Michael Moore's "Sicko" set to premier June 29th!
FCL attended the first American screening of Michael Moore's film "Sicko" in Sacramento, June 12th. The film makes a
dramatic and compelling case for eliminating the role of insurance companies
in the delivery of health care. While FCL does not promote commercial
ventures, the educational value of this film is enormous and has the
potential to take the movement for universal health care to new levels!
We're no longer "preaching to the choir," so to speak.
A huge turnout during the opening week helps ensure that the movie will
receive widespread distribution and sends the message to our elected
representatives that achieving universal health care is your major priority.
Therefore, we urge you to check your local listings and take 10 friends to
the opening of "Sicko" in your local community!
