FCL's Recommendations for the June 3rd Primary
Dear Friend of FCL,
The Friends Committee on Legislation's Board of Directors makes the following recommendations for the June 3rd Primary Election:
Proposition 98. No. Government Acquisition. Regulation of Private Property. While its backers claim its purpose is to prevent unfair confiscations of private property by government's use of eminent domain, Proposition 98 threatens many of the positive steps that California and local communities have taken with respect to the creation of affordable housing, environmental protection, conservation and smart growth. Proposition 98 also has a hidden agenda: the elimination of rent control.
Proposition 99. Yes. Eminent Domain. Acquisition of Owner-Occupied Residence. Proposition 99 is a simple, narrowly focused, straightforward reform that offers individual citizens protection against the most egregious abuses of eminent domain. If Proposition 99 receives more votes than Proposition 98, then Proposition 98 will not become law. Thus, the surest way to ensure that Proposition 98 fails is to pass Proposition 99.

FCL's recommendations in opposition to Proposition 98 and in support of Proposition 99 are joined by California Church Impact, the League of Women Voters of California, Housing California, the California Rural Legal Assistance Foundation, the Western Center on Law and Poverty, the California League of Conservation Voters, Sierra Club California and numerous other organizations.
FCL does not endorse or oppose candidates for public office.
