Urge Governor Schwarzenegger to sign student privacy legislation!

FCL's letter to Governor Schwarzenegger

Dear FCL Supporter,

The federal "No Child Left Behind" (NCLB) act ties federal funding for education to providing military recruiters access to students. NCLB also provides that parents and students may opt out of having their contact information provided to military recruiters.

The problem is that few schools have procedures to notify parents and students of their choices. As a result, few parents, students or school employees know of the right to opt out and student contact information is routinely provided to military recruiters without consent. Joining the military is not just another job. In addition to the potential for casualties, unlike all other jobs, once a student signs the dotted line, s/he is obligated to fulfill the duration of the contract.

Assembly Bill 2994 , by Sally Lieber, D., Mountain View, requires military recruiters to obtain consent before accessing student's contact information. It does so without placing an undue burden on schools. Parents and students would have the option of opting  out on the Emergency Notification cards that schools send home with students at the beginning of each school year. The bill passed both houses of the Legislature and now awaits Governor Schwarzenegger's signature.

Below is a timely article from the Associated Press which demonstrates the need for this legislation.

TAKE ACTION NOW!

Please take a moment to urge Governor Schwarzenegger to sign AB 2994 into law!
