Bill to protect students from military recruiters advances! Phone calls and letters needed.

Assembly Bill 2994 (Lieber) - SUPPORT LETTER (PDF)

Dear Friend of FCL,

Assembly Bill 2994, by Sally Lieber (D-Mountain View), passed the full Assembly and now moves to the Senate, where it will be heard in the Senate Education Committee next Tuesday, June 10.

While the federal "No Child Left Behind Act" provides that parents and students may opt out of having a student's contact information made available to military recruiters, few parents or students are aware that the law provides them with this option. As a result, this information is routinely provided to military recruiters.
 
AB 2994 puts a process in place that informs parents and students of their choices and provides them with the opportunity to opt out from having a student's contact information made available to military recruiters. The legislation also provides that the military may offer the Armed Services Vocational Aptitude Battery test (ASVAB) on public school campuses only on the condition that the test results and student information will not be used for recruiting purposes.
