While most "bad bills" have failed in this, the first year of the legislative session, their are several key bills on the governor's desk that should be signed into law. Please call, e-mail, or fax letters to Governor Schwarzenegger and tell him to sign these bills into law!
Please see above attachment links for copies of the FCL's letters to the Governor. You are welcome to refer to FCL's letters for talking points in your communications with the Governor.
Equality/Non-discrimination
- AB 48 (Sally Lieber) -- Increases California's minimum wage
Health Care
- AB 296 (Gloria Negrete McLeod) -- Provides Hepatitis C screening for prisoners.
- AB 478 (Sally Lieber) -- Provides pregnant female prisoners with prenatal care and prohibits shackling during the birthing process.
- AB 772 (Wilma Chan) -- Enables children from families with incomes up to 300 percent of the federal poverty level to enroll in the Healthy Families program and receive health care coverage.
Criminal Justice/Imprisonment
- AB 561 (Cindy Montanez) -- Requires the Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation to perform educational assessments for prisoners and requires the implementation of literacy programs to ensure that each prisoner can achieve at least a ninth grade reading level.
- AB 698 (Ray Haynes) -- Increases media access to prisons and prisoners.
- AB 862 (Karen Bass) -- Requires the Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation to give every prisoner who is the parent of a dependent child a notice of parental rights and responsibilities and information on how to modify child support orders.
Housing
- AB 712 (Canciamilla) -- Makes it harder for local governments to make housing density reductions.
- SB 575 (Torlakson) -- Prohibits the denial of a permit to build low and moderate income housing unless a jurisdiction has met its low and moderate income housing requirements.
Non-Violence
- AB 1179 (Leland Yee) -- Prohibits the sale, rental and distribution of unusually violent video games to persons under age 17.
