Universal Health Care Legislation Advances!
Dear FCL Supporter,
As the legislative session winds down to its final days, Senate Bill 840, the California Health Insurance Reliability Act (CHIRA), by Senator Sheila Kuehl (D-Santa Monica), passed the Assembly Appropriations Committee yesterday by a vote of 11-5 with two abstentions. The bill to create a universal health care system for California now moves to the Assembly Floor for a final vote before going to the governor for signature.
By shifting current health care spending from administration and profits to health care services, all Californians will have access to affordable health care. CHIRA is friendly to consumers and businesses alike. Only those businesses that pay nothing for health care would see their costs increase, and most will receive cost reductions. Health care delivery would remain private.
While the prognosis for SB 840 on the Assembly Floor is favorable, there are still some Democrats who have not committed their support. In order to ensure that SB 840 goes to the governor, we need a strong grass roots push.
TAKE ACTION NOW -- Send SB 840 to the governor!
- Contact your Assembly Member (letters, faxes, personal visits, phone calls and e-mails) and urge your Assembly Member to vote YES on SB 840 (please download sample letter). If your Assembly Member already supports SB 840, be sure to thank her or him.
