Info Alert: New Report Says 655,000 Iraqis Killed Since Invasion of Iraq
Dear FCL Supporter,
A recent survey conducted for the Bloomberg School of Public Health at John Hopkins University indicates that 654,965 Iraqis have been killed since the March 2003 invasion of Iraq by American armed forces. Ninety-two percent of those interviewed who reported a death were able to produce a death certificate.
The Bush Administration maintains that the Iraqi people are willing to pay the price of freedom and puts the number of Iraqi deaths at 30,000. In an October 11 press conference, President Bush said that he doesn’t consider this report to be credible and that “the methodology is pretty well discredited.”
Others have defended the report’s methodology. In an interview with CNN, renowned pollster John Zogby said “I can't vouch for it 100 percent, but I'll vouch for it 95 percent, which is as good as it gets in survey research.” The report includes a detailed description of its methodology.
Responsive government requires effective citizen participation, and effective engagement requires access to relevant information. FCL has posted a copy of the report on our website for your information.
