Bring the California National Guard home from Iraq
Dear FCL Supporter,
In October 2002, the United States Congress adopted a Joint Resolution to authorize the use of the United States Armed Forces against Iraq. To date, over 2,000 U.S. soldiers and as many as 100,000 Iraqi troops and civilians have been killed and many more have been maimed. In addition, the cost of the war on Iraq now exceeds $220 billion with no end in sight.
Congress adopted this Joint Resolution after relying on statements by President Bush and key members of his administration that Iraq had weapons of mass destruction and statements implying that Saddam Hussein was involved in the September 11 tragedies, statements that have turned out to be false.
Assembly Joint Resolution 36, by Loni Hancock (D-Berkeley) (1) requests Governor Schwarzenegger to ensure that the President and Congress take immediate steps to withdraw California National Guard Troops from Iraq; and (2) requests the California Congressional Delegation to call on Congress to restore the balance between the federal government and the states by limiting federal control of the National Guard to cases where there is an insurrection or a Congressional Declaration of War as per the U.S. Constitution.
