Take Action to Pass Universal Health Care!
Dear FCL Supporter,
FCL is committed to achieving universal health care for California. We were part of the initial discussions on whether to proceed via the ballot or through the Legislature, and we helped select Senator Sheila Kuehl (D-Santa Monica) as the author to champion this cause. During this time, we have seen a small coalition of universal health care advocates blossom into a statewide movement. Recently, the California Nurses Association and the California Federation of Teachers joined our cause!
Senate Bill 840, the California Health Insurance Reliability Act passed the Senate and moved to the Assembly. SB 840 creates a universal health care system for California by consolidating current health care spending into a single-payer system with low administrative overhead. We anticipate that SB 840 will go to the governor later this year.
Much work remains to be done. The struggle to achieve universal health care in California pits people power versus powerful special interests that profit handsomely from California’s patchwork of health care systems-- a "system" that leaves seven million Californians uninsured.
Take Action Now
Passing universal health care will require a sustained grass roots effort. In August, Health Care for All, California, will begin a year-long grass roots movement in 365 cities in California beginning in Los Osos (San Luis Obispo County) and culminating with a huge rally in Sacramento.
In the meantime:
• Please contact your local Health Care for All chapter at 1-888-442-4255 (toll free) and volunteer to help enlist local governments to support SB 840. Ask about joining the "365 Campaign" in your community.
• Ask political candidates in the upcoming elections to publicly voice their support for SB 840.
•Write letters to the editor of your local newspaper and voice your support for SB 840.
For more information, please contact the FCL office.
Thank you.
Sincerely,
Jim Lindburg
Legislative Advocate
