Our Finances

Our mission is carried out by two sister organizations:  The Friends Committee on Legislation of California (FCLCA) and the FCL Education Fund.

Friends Committee on Legislation of California (FCLCA)

FCLCA is a 501(c)(4) nonprofit that engages primarily in lobbying. Our tax I.D. number is 94-1222456. FCLCA’s 2012 budget is about $345,000. The budget supports three fulltime staff members, an office near the Capitol, our grassroots and online lobbying program, our publications and events, and our outreach to prisoners through the FCLCA Newsletter. In 2011, about 66% of our expenditures paid for direct program costs; 18% for administration (including rent, computers, board-related expenses and a portion of staff salaries) and 15% on fundraising. These percentages adhere to the guidelines set by the Better Business Bureau Wise Giving Alliance Standards for Charity Accountability.

FCLCA receives funding from some of the Quaker Meetings and churches in California (about 7% of our budget); our primary source of income is contributions from individuals, including annual gifts and bequests.  Generous bequests over the last five years have allowed us to expand our grassroots and online program, supplementing the income we receive each year from supporters.  We receive no government funding, and as a 501(c)(4) organization (rather than a (501)(c)(3) charity) we are not eligible for most foundation grants.

Basically, we rely on the partnership and generosity of contributing members like you!

In celebration of our 60 years of advocacy and in hopeful anticipation of 60 more years serving as a voice of conscience, we have launched the  60_more_logo. Our goal is increase the number of contributing members and the number of planned gifts to insure sustainability for the next six decades and beyond.

The FCL Education Fund

The FCL Education Fund conducts charitable educational work associated with our mission of promoting justice in California’s political process.  Contributions to the FCL Education Fund are tax-deductible (Tax ID Number 68-0062639).  FCL Education Fund employs no staff itself, but compensates FCLCA for educational program work performed by FCLCA staff.  It also publishes a roster of the California State Legislature each legislative session that is widely distributed to prisoners inside California’s institutions and to grassroots activists.
