J-3
The safest society is one in which citiezens do not
think weapons are useful for protection, and in which
there are few guns.
Accordingly, we support legislation limiting the sale,
transport, ownership, and use of firearms and ammunition.
We urge that most private weapons ownership of handguns
and all automatic and semi-automatic weapons be prohibited.
Regulations for the ownership and use of all firearms
should be established and enforced. Such regulations
should include a registration process which provides
for a background screening check, a waiting period,
and successful completion of a training course in
firearms safety.
We are fully aware that firearms control legislation
does not take the place of constructive measures
to reduce crime and social disorganization. However,
just as firearms are means to violent ends, we hope that
firearms control, in addition to preventing many untimely
deaths, will be a means of developing support for non-
violent methods of resolving problems and contribute to
a more peaceful society.
